Wen-Chan Tsai is currently Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He also serves as the Secretary General of APLAR and President of the Taiwan Rheumatology Association.
Prof. Tsai obtained his MD from the School of Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University and went on to complete his PhD from the Institute of Medical Research at Kaohsiung Medical University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In 1996, Professor Tsai pursued further training overseas and spent a year in the Department of Rheumatology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, as a postdoctoral fellow and focused his academic research on the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis in Professor David Yu’s Lab. He qualified as a specialist in internal medicine in 1989 and as a specialist in rheumatology in 1991.
Professor Tsai started his career at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital as a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine. He became Attending Physician of Rheumatology in 1989, and was later promoted to Chief of Rheumatology and Director of Resident Affairs in 2003. Professor Tsai served as Deputy Director of the Department of Medicine from 2007 to 2009, and Director of Molecular and Cellular Function in the Department of Laboratory Medicine from 2007 to 2008. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Deputy Superintendent of Kaohsiung Municipal Ta-Tung Hospital from 2010–2013.
